At IMI, Leadership is more than a subject taught in the classroom. It is one of the school’s core pillars, developed through direct exposure to global perspectives, real world challenges, and accomplished leaders who have shaped international policy, business, and society.

As part of this commitment, IMI recently welcomed Erik Solheim, former United Nations Under-Secretary-General and former Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), for an exclusive guest lecture and student discussion focused on leadership, sustainability, and global developments.

The visit was organised through a special invitation from Mr David Hailstones, CEO of IMI Group AG, whose extensive international network continues to bring distinguished global figures to campus, giving students access to perspectives rarely available in a traditional classroom setting.

Throughout his career, Solheim has worked closely with governments, political leaders, and international organisations on climate policy, economic development, peace negotiations, and global cooperation. Drawing on decades of international experience, he shared insights into the leadership challenges shaping today’s world, from sustainability and innovation to geopolitical change and international collaboration.

Students had the opportunity to engage directly with him in an interactive and personal setting. The discussion focused not only on theory, but also on practical leadership, decision making, and the responsibilities future leaders will face in an increasingly interconnected world.

The session reflects IMI’s wider commitment to developing leadership through experience. Alongside academic study, students regularly meet influential figures from business, politics, diplomacy, and entrepreneurship, including former Prime Ministers, Members of the European Parliament, senior executives, and international decision makers.

Erik Solheim will also be returning to IMI for future discussions and events, continuing a tradition of bringing global leaders directly into the student experience.

For students at IMI, these opportunities provide direct access to internationally recognised leaders, meaningful discussion, and valuable insight into the realities shaping business, hospitality, sustainability, and leadership around the world.
