As well as a world-class hospitality education, we also like to provide our students with an unforgettable student experience, providing memories that will last a lifetime.

We are lucky that the nearby city of Luzern is one of Switzerland's most vibrant when it comes to events, festivals and cultural activities.

One of the biggest of these is the Fasnacht Carnival which takes place each February and sees the city's streets transform into vibrant parades of colour, music and costume.

Our new students for the February intake had the good luck of the carnival falling right in the middle of their BIG Week induction, meaning they got an incredible introduction to their new home town.

Our new students enjoy all the fun of the Fasnacht festival.

"The pure passion, commitment and creative imagination put into the costumes and the layout of the town was a truly wonderful sight to see."

Sanidhaya Satyathi - New BA (Hons) student in February 2024 intake

Originating from medieval times, when masked balls and parades marked the end of winter, Fasnacht has evolved into one of Luzern's most anticipated events.

The history of the event is steeped in symbolism and local folklore. Dating back to the 15th century, it was initially a festival to drive away winter spirits and welcome the spring.

With many middle and southern European countries celebrating a form of carnival at this time of year, the event's meaning and cultural significance has evolved over time.

Often containing a satirical element, it became a time for social commentary, with elaborate masks and costumes used to mock authority figures and societal norms. This blending of ancient ritual with modern satire continues to define the spirit of Fasnacht today.

The festivities start early as people crowd into the Old Town for the 5am "Tagwach".

Modern celebrations of Luzern's Fasnacht are a whirlwind of colour and sound, typically starting on "Dirty Thursday" (Schmutziger Donnerstag) and culminating on "Fat Tuesday" (Fett Dienstag).

The city comes alive with parades featuring extravagant floats, lively music from traditional Fasnacht bands, and crowds of revellers donning intricate masks and costumes. Visitors and locals alike immerse themselves in the festivities, indulging in local delicacies like Fasnachtschüechli (pastries) and Mehlsuppe (flour soup).

Despite its evolution, Luzern Fasnacht remains a cherished link to the past, a time when communities came together to chase away winter's chill with laughter and merriment, making it a must-experience event for anyone seeking the vibrant heart of Swiss tradition.

Our new students were delighted to enjoy such a unique welcome to IMI and Switzerland and thoroughly embraced the Fasnacht spirit during their visit.

An incredible start to their IMI journey and a uniquely-Swiss experience that will not be forgotten!
