Renowned Guest Lecturer

18 October 2017

We were delighted to welcome leading tourism academic Professor Chris Cooper to IMI to work with our MBA students...

Academic excellence is something we encourage every student at IMI to aspire to.

In order to help them achieve this goal, we welcome a number of industry figures and experts each semester to guest lecture on campus.

One of the best-known and highly-respected academics in the field of tourism is Professor Chris Cooper who is a regular visitor to IMI.

Currently co-heading the Centre for International Tourism and Events Management Research (CITEM), he works with a team dedicated to international and interdisciplinary research across the disciplines of tourism, hospitality and events at IMI partner school Oxford Brookes University (OBU).

Professor Cooper was Dean of the Faculty of Business at OBU from 2009-2013 and, during this time, achieved five-year accreditation by EPAS for its BA (Hons) Business Management and BA (Hons) International Business Management degrees and its three Hospitality MSc programmes.

Before moving to Oxford, he built up the School of Tourism at the University of Queensland where he was Foundation Professor of Tourism and Head of the School of Tourism.

He works with international agencies in tourism research and education, including the European Union, the International Labour Organization, the OECD and ASEAN.

Primarily working with the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), he held the Chair of the UNWTO's Education Council from 2005 to 2007.

He is the author of a number of journal papers and books in the fields of tourism and hospitality and was awarded the United Nations Ulysses prize for contributions to tourism education and policy in 2009.

During an intensive two-day lecture and workshop programme, Professor Cooper and our MBA students explored sustainable tourism planning and practice using contemporary case studies and focusing on corporate approaches to sustainability, climate change, enviromental impact assessments and green-marketing.

It was a hugely beneficial experience for our students to work with such a decorated scholar and we are very grateful to Professor Cooper for guiding them further on their journey towards 'academic excellence'.
