Fasnacht at IMI

05 March 2019

We were excited to bring the carnival to campus as we celebrated the traditional Luzern Fasnacht festival here in Kastanienbaum...

The Swiss people are known for their disciplined and ordered approach to life and, most of the time, this is very true; however, once every year things get a little more relaxed...

The Fasnacht carnival is a traditional middle-European festival celebrating the chasing away of the Winter "demons" and the welcoming of Spring. In Switzerland, the Luzern and Basel Fasnachts are the two largest and best known celebrations.

During the carnival, the whole city of Luzern is transformed with giant parades through the streets, guggenmusik bands playing and thousands of people dressed in elaborate costumes.

We always encourage our students to visit the city during Fasnacht to experience this unique cultural event, but this year we were able to go one better by bringing the carnival to campus!

On the Friday evening of the festival, we were delighted to welcome the Rasselbandi Horw guggenmusik band to campus to play live for students as well as the local Kastanienbaum residents. Food and drink was served and everyone enjoyed getting into the Fasnacht spirit.

We also held a special dress-down day on campus so that students could put on their best costumes and were fully in the carnival mood by the time the entertainment arrived in the evening.

Our students really appreciated such a close-up glance at this Swiss cultural tradition and it was also a great way for our school to integrate with the local community here in Kastanienbaum. We hope to be able to host many other similar events in future!
