IMI Alumnus Darren Teoh's Dewakan restaurant has been named in Asia's top 50 and as the best restaurant in Malaysia for 2019...

At IMI, we are always looking for good restaurant recommendations, especially when we are travelling.

Having many highly-skilled, culinary arts alumni around the world definitely makes finding something good to eat that bit easier!

Malaysian alumnus Darren Teoh has taken this success to another level recently as his Dewakan restaurant was named as one of the top 50 in Asia.

The restaurant, found on the campus of IMI partner school KDU University College, serves an inventive and beautifully presented menu based on indigenous products such as kulim, a jungle fruit, ketumpang air, a type of pepper, and bunga kantan, a torch ginger flower.

Darren, who also studied and worked as a culinary lecturer at KDU UC, is very proud of his culinary heritage and was inspired and influenced by the meals prepared for him as a child by his mother, aunt and grandmother.

This combination of traditional flavours and ingredients with cutting edge technique and presentation has won Dewakan many fans both in Malaysia and throughout the continent with diners describing the dishes presented as works of "modern art."

The restaurant offers two tasting menus - the 16-course Kayangan and the nine-course Nusantara - and has savoury courses such as goat tartare, prawns warmed in starfruit juice and banana heart with kerdas, and desserts such as temuan chocolate with jaggery ice cream, and popsicles.

Everyone at IMI would like to offer a big congratulations to Darren and the Dewakan team on their success - we can't wait to visit the restaurant on our next trip to Malaysia!
