Anti-Food Waste Week

16 September 2019

We ran our regular Food Waste Awareness week to encourage our students to think about their food choices and the impact this has on the wider world...

We are very lucky at IMI to be provided with a choice of healthy, nutritional food options each day.

Our kitchen team work hard to provide a varied menu for our students and there is no limit on the amount students can eat.

However, one thing that we are working hard to reduce is any food wasted here on campus. Food waste is a huge problem worldwide with almost one third of all food produced globally ending up in the trash.

With people in many countries still struggling to feed themselves and their families and the massive environmental issues associated with wastage and food production, this is an issue that urgently needs to be tackled.

Each semester, IMI holds an awareness week in which we stress the importance of students only taking what they can finish each mealtime, with the target being that we only see empty plates at the end of the service.

We encourage our students to consider the issue on a global scale by providing a range of educational and further reading materials each lunch service so that students recognise the wider implications of food going to waste.

Students are also actively involved, producing their own posters and filming short video statements where they discuss what the issue means to them personally and what we as individuals can do to help tackle the problem.

Obviously, our intention is that the message resonates with our students and that this is not just a one-week effort. Rather we hope that the awareness raised is something all students and faculty carry with them when making food choices both at IMI and in their outside daily lives.
