Staff go under the table

10 October 2019

There was great interest on campus in the regular Staff Pool competition! Could Mr. Currie defend his title or would there be a new claimant to the crown...

We follow a strict strategy of work hard, play hard (and fairly) here at IMI and never is this more true than when it comes to the semester staff pool competition.

The October event was bigger than ever, with a total of ten faculty and support staff taking part and our first ever female competitor (take a bow Dr. Brühlmann)!

The recreation area was packed for the opening game as the defending champion Mr. Currie took on Mr. Portmann from our Careers team. A tight game saw Mr. Currie progress to the semi-final and the prospect of a mouth-watering tie against Prof. Benetatos.

In the other side of the draw, wins for Mr. Murray, Dr. Brühlmann and Mr. Pinkston resulted in an all-American quarter final where Mr. P beat Dr. B to set up a semi-final against Mr. Murray.

In two very close semi-finals, the nerves started to show as some missed shots and mistakes caused groans from the watching students. After six frames of nerve-wracking pool, the British duo came out on top to give us a repeat of last semester’s final as Mr. Currie and Mr. Murray once again went head-to-head.

It was a strong start for Mr. Currie in the final as he took the first frame in the best of five. Mr. Murray hit back to take the next two and the lead in the tie before a dramatic finale saw Mr. Currie prevail in the last two frames to hold on to his crown as Staff Champion.

A big thanks must go to the SRC team who organised and managed the event excellently as well as providing prizes for the first time! We now look forward to the staff vs students tournament which always makes for some entertaining moments…
