Future-Proofing our students

Each semester we take our BA students studying on the Managing Information Systems module to discover the latest in hi-tech hospitality...

Technology and digital innovation seems to develop more quickly each year with new products and systems hitting the market with increased regularity.

Hospitality, like many other industries, can see huge benefits from these developments in terms of both customer experience and management efficiency gains. As ever, the early adopters have the greatest chance of seizing a competitive advantage.

At IMI, we want to ensure we send our students off into the industry with an open mind and a willingness to embrace new developments and opportunities.

Every semester, we take our BA (Hons) students studying on the Managing Information Systems unit to Luzern’s Verkehrshaus Media World where the can see the latest in innovative technology and VR and AR systems.

Offering virtual reality goggles, a TV studio, a green screen facility and a 360° photo booth for taking all-round selfies, the exhibition space also partners with Red Bull to offer virtual reality experiences based on the company’s international events.

New this year, was a simulator offering visitors the chance to experience the Red Bull Stratos project, where Austria’s Felix Baumgartner astonished millions watching live around the world with a parachute jump from the edge of space.

But what has this got to do with hospitality you might ask? Our goal is to provide students with a holistic mindset when it comes to approaching their work. The time and resource savings that sensible implementation of new technologies can bring is immense and the growth of augmented reality experiences give guests a whole new way of interacting with your business and offerings.

Our students certainly enjoyed their visit to the Media World and returned to campus with a whole range of fresh new ideas and perspectives.
