Term Break Activities

Normally, term breaks are when our students travel and explore different parts of Switzerland and Europe; however, with the current travel restrictions, we provided entertainment closer to home...

Term breaks are a time for students to relax and unwind after a busy semester of study and, very often, this involves exploring different parts of Europe.

With current restrictions due to the Covid pandemic meaning travel opportunities are limited, we wanted to ensure our students were kept entertained and engaged over the break.

To do this we put together a series of activities and events that students could enjoy in a safe manner while still experiencing social interaction, some friendly competition and the chance to learn new skills.

Our first session of the week was a Russian language exchange class hosted by IMI’s BDA team member Elina. This gave students the chance to come and learn some introductory Russian words and phrases while also sharing examples from their own languages.

It was then time to head down to the IMI kitchens where we held two culinary challenges over the course of the week. Under the expert eyes of some of our culinary students, participants were provided with basic muffin and cookie recipes and were then given free reign to be as creative as they liked with flavour and presentation. The results were a pleasure for both the tastebuds and the eye and we awarded prizes for the best bakes in both categories.

After all those calories, we needed some exercise so it was perfect timing for our 5K Charity Fun Run or Walk. Following a route around our beautiful Kastanienbaum countryside, staff and students both participated to raise money for a local Luzern charity providing care to the elderly and vulnerable.

To round the week off, we celebrated the Hindu festival of Diwali with a special themed dinner in our decorated and illuminated Main Dining Hall.

A big thank you to the student volunteers who helped coordinate the events and all the students and staff who took part. We obviously hope that, by the next term break, travel is more possible and our students can explore again but, as a backup, a fun-filled term break around the IMI campus was not a bad option!
