Students back on internships

05 May 2021

As the world starts to open up again, we were delighted to send our students out to exciting Swiss and international internship placements...

As local and international restrictions start to ease, it has been great to see our students able to embark upon their internship placements this term.

Our dedicated Careers and Internships team has been hard at work over the past months to ensure that students could secure their ideal placements both here in Switzerland and abroad, despite the challenges caused by the Covid pandemic.

With restaurant terraces now able to open in Switzerland and many hotels and restaurants in other countries now fully operational, our students have been able to travel out to fulfil the practical element of the degree study.

Indonesian student Christopher and South African student Andile have both remained in Switzerland for their placements, travelling to the beautiful St. Petersinsel to work at the Klosterhotel based on the island.

“I felt very lucky to have an internship in this situation,” said Christopher.

“Even though the working tempo was a bit slower at the start with less guests, the work was still really enjoyable and we were all looking forward to the opening of the hotel.

“Understanding the current situation made me and the team find the right strategy and solution to bring the hospitality back to normal again and it is now great to see guests returning!”

“The Klosterhotel St Petersinsel has brought me such joy,” added Andile.

“This is the first time I have worked in a professional kitchen and the whole team is so excited to get fully operational and start full service again.”

One person travelling a little further afield for their placement is German hospitality student Annika who is now working on the Balearic island of Majorca at the Cap Rocat Hotel.

“I started my internship a few days before the hotel re-opened for the guests in April,” she explained.

“The pandemic crisis on the island is improving, which meant the hotel has received a boom of bookings.

“I am really enjoying seeing that things are going back to normal and that there is a real need to enjoy some time away. Guests are in a good mood, which makes my internship all the more enjoyable!”

In addition to the above, our team has also placed students in properties in Dubai, Greece, Hong Kong, the Maldives as well as many other locations within Switzerland.

These are really positive developments, and it has been great to witness the energy and enthusiasm with which our students have returned to the workplace. We wish them all the best on their placements and can’t wait to hear more about their experiences when they return to IMI.
