Chef Yono back on campus

18 October 2021

It was our pleasure to welcome back acclaimed Indonesian chef Widjiono (Yono) Purnomo for a special series of culinary guest lectures...

To paraphrase the IMI motto: to the reach the top, it pays to learn from people at the top!

To enhance our students’ learning, we regularly welcome active industry professionals, at the top of their fields, onto campus for special guest lectures and masterclasses.

It was a real pleasure to welcome back Indonesian chef Widjiono (Yono) Purnomo who visited us for a week of guest lectures and a special masterclass for our students.

A native of Jakarta, Indonesia, Chef Yono began his career with Holland America Cruise Lines before settling in the United States where he now runs his own fine-dining restaurant.

Bringing together his native Indonesian flavours with more contemporary Western dishes, he has built an international reputation and is rightly considered one of Indonesia's most successful culinary exports.

During his time with us, he worked closely with our culinary arts students offering them guidance and advice based on his many years working in fine-dining kitchens as well as his experience as a business owner.

The highlight of the visit was a special masterclass where a select group of hospitality and business students joined their culinary arts colleagues to witness a live cooking demonstration where Chef Jono prepared a range of his speciality dishes.

The students then had the opportunity to ask him questions about his life and career as well as having the chance to taste the sumptuous plates he had prepared.

We were delighted to have Chef Jono back on the IMI campus and are very thankful that he took the time to visit us. We look forward to welcoming him back again in the near future for more delicious culinary creations!
