Happily Ever After...

03 February 2022

We were so happy to be visited by alumni Moorthy and Nitya who met at IMI 30 years ago and married shortly after their studies. We sat down to catch up with them...

You studied with us in 1992-1993, what are your memories of IMI at that time?

ND: Best times of our life!

MM: I would say so, yeah. Best time of my life – that’s when I met my wife! Of course, IMI is an amazing place with beautiful scenery. If someone asked me to describe IMI, I would say it’s a school that gives you knowledge with a combination of family orientation. It’s a small, family-run educational institution which offers a very warm atmosphere. Especially in those days – the 90s – there was no WhatsApp, no Skype – we had to put coins in the phone to call home. Luckily, IMI created this warm environment and brought all of us together as a family. Then you forget the homesickness. This is a very distinctive part of IMI – not only a school that provides you with education but also somewhere that gives you that unity.

How did you first hear about IMI when you were looking for schools in the 90s?

ND: I saw a small ad in the paper – Swiss Hotel SchooI, IMI – and my dad took me to meet a Swiss lady who had come to Mumbai. She was the sole rep with a few brochures, and she convinced me that IMI was a great choice. I was looking to go overseas to study, and she gave me the idea of Switzerland. I was so young and just wanted to discover the world. A lot of my friends were going to America, but I decided I wanted something different and hospitality really appealed to me. I didn’t want to do the typical path of being a doctor or something like that, I had a more people-orientated outlook. I loved travelling and it was just a really good opportunity for me.

MM: I was actually already in Switzerland at that time at another school. I was in the French speaking part of Switzerland doing my stage in Geneva but was keen to move to the German speaking part as that’s where most of my friends were. Through a friend, I came to know about IMI and I discovered it was a small, boutique school. I loved the location in Weggis and decided straight away to enrol. That’s when of course I met my wife and the rest is history as they say (laughs).

How have you careers progressed since graduating from IMI?

MM: I have stayed in hospitality. I work in a hotel in Dubai called One&Only The Palm and I am the Resident Manager there. I would say that my career has progressed very well. Every career is a puzzle, and the key is that everything connects in the right places. The education I received was a strong foundation for my career as well as the support I receive from my wife. As we know, hospitality is long hours, but it is also my commitment and my passion. The school gave us a great educational foundation and guidance but then, ultimately, it is us who makes our life. I’ve been with the brand for 12 years now and it is an amazing place to work! Like IMI, it is quite boutique. Everybody knows you by name so it creates that warmth and empathy between both guests and staff members which I feel connects well with the experience I had at IMI.

ND: I worked for a cruise line after my IMI study and then, after that, took a break and completed my Master’s degree in Australia. I did various part-time jobs during my further studies and then we moved to the Maldives together. Afterwards, I took a back step to support Moorthy with his career.

How was the feeling revisiting the school today?

ND: They were the best times of our lives! It feels more relaxed now than when we were studying but maybe that’s because we don’t have classes anymore (laughs).

MM: Even sometimes when we listen to music or we chat with our friends, you remember your times at school and it just brings back so many good memories. It’s priceless!

ND: We made friends at IMI that, 30 years on, we are still in touch with. We have a group and we reminisce about listening to Bryan Adams in the room (laughs) – you know, all the good times! Everybody has changed but IMI provides a home where you come back and they know you.

MM: If someone asked me, would I do it again? I would say, definitely! It’s the place, the people and the environment – the best time of our lives!
