IMI: Thanks for taking the time to speak to us today Fredrik! As you may remember, at IMI we have a saying: "to reach the top, it pays to start at the top!" Do you believe you have reached the top already? If not, where would you like your career to take you?
FB: Well, I certainly do not believe that I have reached the top yet! The career is a wonderful journey filled with unique experiences all along and we should never stop to say: "I have reached the top." To learn, progress, develop and evolve, one must never halt.
IMI: Did you always hold an ambition to travel and work abroad?
FB: Yes, travel has always been a passion. As a hotelier with an international company, we travel the world, learning from new cultures while living in and enjoying unique and interesting places. The dream job!
IMI: If you had not excelled in your hospitality career, what other career path would you have taken?
FB: For sure something in the law enforcement.
IMI: From your experience as a General Manager, name one key skill you have adopted in your current leadership style at Four Seasons Hotel and Residences Bengaluru?
FB: It would be unfair to mention only one skill as there are so many skills we have to learn and develop as a leader – it all depends on the environment, situation and requirements at hand. In my current role in Bengaluru, I have certainly improved my patience skills as opening a luxury hotel in India is not an easy task.
IMI: Having worked in the industry for many years now, what would your number one piece of advice be for our current hospitality students?
FB: Patience is a great virtue. Don’t try to rush your career. Gain experience and enjoy the moment; be open minded, humble, passionate and never ever give up!!
IMI: Over the course of your career, what are the major changes and developments that you witnessed in the industry?
FB: There are so many positive changes all the time. We need to be flexible and open minded, accepting change and not living in the past. For example, technology has advanced a lot and we have tools that are unbelievably well received. On the other hand, service will change slightly as traveler’s habits and patterns are changing. However, delivering caring, warm, personalized and unscripted service will always be the most important quality for hotels today and in the future. What makes Four Seasons unique and inspiring is the ability to allow our people to be authentic by creating unique and everlasting experiences.
IMI: Can you share your happiest or funniest memory from your time at IMI with us?
FB: I have so many fond memories from my time at IMI. Swimming in the dark, cold lake, ice skating with the team, cooking Singaporean noodles and meeting great people. I am still in close contact with my former classmate Nacho and we meet from time to time back in one of my favourite places – Spain!
